Mercedes has revealed its new limited edition fully electric Mercedes-Maybach S-class vehicle, designed in partnership with the late creative architect and fashion designer Virgil Abloh.
The latest Mercedes electric vehicle is the third collaboration between the German firm and the American designer, who died just last year. The special-edition S-Class will be strictly limited to just 150 units and will launch together with a capsule collection, designed by Virgil Abloh in collaboration with Off‑White, a luxury Italian fashion designer label created and founded by Abloh himself.
For the appearance of the customisable luxury limousine, Abloh partnered with Gorden Wagener, Mercedes-Benz Chief Design Officer, to create and feature the "Project MAYBACH" two-tone colour palette of glossy "Obsidian Black" and "Sand." This colour theme remains in the interior, including all four seats, steering wheel, doors, lower dashboard, floor mats and ceiling. To top it off, a custom Mercedes-Maybach and Virgil Abloh logo appears multiple times across the car's interior.
The collaboration aims at merging innovative design and sustainability into a unique solution
These specific details follow suit for the S-class user interface, displaying to the driver the most up to date variation of the Mercedes Benz User Xperience (MBUX). This adaptable technology operates using artificial intelligence. The model also comes with selected visual elements, such as a coloured border home button and a brand logo noting the edition, assigned to elevate the driver every moment on the road.
"The limited-edition Maybach by Virgil Abloh exemplifies the symbiosis between innovative design and ultimate craftsmanship now available on the road." - stated Gorden Wagener, Chief Design Officer at Mercedes-Benz Group AG.
Each customer will be gifted a specially-made wooden box with sand-coloured Nappa leather, branded with the Mercedes-Maybach and Virgil Abloh logo. The gift box will entail a 1/18 scale replica of the limited-edition car, two car keys and a carabiner hook. Customers will also receive a car cover, featuring the Mercedes-Maybach and Virgil Abloh logos with their purchase.
The collaboration with Abloh is just one way the Mercedes-Maybach brand aims to innovate and evolve concerning the environment and sustainability. The brand will launch its first fully-electric model for mass retail by 2023. The luxury automotive brand highlighted its crucial focus in sustainable technology: particularly during the development process, through the preparation of a recycling concept for each model, all of the vehicle's components and materials were examined to establish their suitability to be recyclable.
