Honda has unveiled the sixth generation of its popular CR-V SUV, ahead of its launch this autumn.

It comes in two variants; a full hybrid (e:HEV) and a plug-in hybrid (e:PHEV) powertrain, the latter making its European debut.

Both options feature a 2.0-litre four-cylinder direct injection Atkinson-cycle petrol engine, which Honda says has been re-engineered to enhance efficiency, refinement, and dynamic performance.

The e:PHEV variant offers a claimed all-electric range of up to 51 miles, which is said to be enough to cover the majority of daily trips on electric drive alone.

According to Honda, the plug-in CR-V can also achieve a 100 percent state of charge from empty in just 2.5 hours, provided the battery temperature is at 25 degrees.

Meanwhile, the full hybrid CR-V features Honda’s e:HEV powertrain, which enables the vehicle to shift between EV, Hybrid, and Engine Drive modes.

The new CR-V retains the same silhouette as the outgoing car, but has been updated to give “a more dominant road presence”.

It’s also wider, longer, and taller than the outgoing model, providing more interior space for passengers, including 16mm more rear legroom and 118 percent more luggage capacity. Passengers also get eight levels of adjustment for the rear seat recline. However, there aren't any plans to make a seven-seater version.

The CR-V will feature a nine-inch infotainment system that is also present in the Civic, and various trim and finishes that are similar to those used in the Civic, such as the fascia treatment, will be used in the CR-V.

The vehicle will come equipped with leather upholstery on all versions, heated and ventilated front seats, heated rear seats, an enhanced version of Honda's Sensing safety systems, and self-parking technology will come fitted on the PHEV variant.

It is likely that the pricing for the new CR-V will see a small increase from the current model, potentially costing from £35,000 and around £40,000 for the PHEV model.
