The flagship Mercedes-Maybach S-Class can now be selected as a plug-in hybrid - a first for the bespoke luxury brand.

Badged as the Mercedes-Maybach S 580 e, the plug-in hybrid version is a greener option to the existing twin-turbo V8 and V12 models already available, and is said to provide an even more peaceful driving experience.

It is powered by a 3.0-litre six-cylinder turbocharged engine paired to an electric motor, meaning a combined power output of 503bhp and 750 Nm of torque. This results in a 0-62mph time of just 5.1 seconds, and a top speed of 155 mph. With electric mode engaged however, its top speed is limited to 86 mph.

The Mercedes-Maybach S-Class, with its new plug-in hybrid technology, boasts impressive fuel efficiency and low emissions, making it an ideal choice for eco-conscious buyers.

According to the official WLTP combined-cycle fuel consumption, the vehicle can achieve a range of 235 MPG to 294 MPG and CO2 emissions between 18g/km to 23g/km.

The firm has not confirmed the car’s battery size, though it can be replenished through a wall box charger with a capacity of up to 11kW.

A fast-charging option at 60kW is available for those who need a full recharge in just 30 minutes. Once the battery is fully charged, the vehicle has a claimed range of up to 62 miles on pure electric power, allowing for zero-emissions urban journeys.

Externally, the car boasts subtle yet distinctive features such as blue accents on the headlights and a left charging flap to the rear.

The interior, on the other hand, remains largely the same as the ICE-powered versions, though the instrument panel now displays a charge-state indicator for the battery.

Though the S 580 e is Mercedes-Maybach’s first plug-in hybrid model, this milestone for the brand will soon be surpassed with the arrival of its first fully electric vehicle, which is planned to arrive by the end of 2023.
